Dependent Care (DepCare) and Health (HFSA) Flexible Spending Accounts

Summary: The Dependent Care Reimbursement Account (DepCare) allows you to pay for eligible dependent care expenses on a pretax, salary reduction basis. The Health (HFSA) flexible spending accounts allows you to pay your health related expenses on a salary reduction basis. Both accounts are known as flexible spending accounts.

Participation: If you are an active employee appointed by the University to work at least 50% time for one year or more, or 100% time for three months or more, you may participate in DepCare or HFSA.
  • DepCare only
    If you are married, both you and your spouse (unless your spouse is incapable of self-care or is a full-time student) must have earned income during the year.
Enrollment: You may enroll when you are hired or transferred into an eligible position, during open enrollment (typically November) or when your status changes. Expenses incurred prior to effective date are not eligible.

- If your status changes during the calendar year, use the Enrollment, Change, Cancellation, or Opt Out Form (UPAY 850)

If you choose to enroll:
  • The amount you specify when you enroll is taken from your paycheck each month and deposited in your designated accounts, administered by CONEXIS
  • You pay your dependent care expenses as usual
  • You submit a claim form and receipts to CONEXIS requesting reimbursement for eligible expenses after the dependent care has been provided
  • CONEXIS sends you a reimbursement check.
